‘Stories from the city, stories from the sea’[i]—exploring chemistry at anthropogenic interfaces “The unifying and distinguishing characteristic of this [modern] era has been the human pre-emption and discovery of the biosphere. This is a simple way of stating a complex paradox: the biosphere was occupied and its exploitation well advanced before its true nature—vulnerable and finite—was even vaguely perceived.” Lynton Caldwell, reproduced in a course pack for ‘The Study of Environment’ (...

The Neutrino Slice of Muon Colliders Matheus Hostert, PhD; Laboratory for Particle Physics and Cosmology, Harvard University Muon colliders are futuristic but strong contenders for pushing the energy frontier of particle physics. If built, these machines will not only be unique probes of high energy physics, but also very intense sources of neutrinos thanks to the short lifetime of the muon. As it turns out, the main detector designed to see muon collisions would see an unprecedented numbe...

Remote Sensing of Earth's Magnetosphere with Energetic Charged Particles Professor Robyn Millan; Department of Physics and Astronomy, Dartmouth College Earth’s magnetic bubble, the magnetosphere, provides a close-up view of how a star interacts with its magnetized planets. Driven by the solar wind, the magnetosphere’s intense storms, explosive substorms, and spectacular aurora are governed by a global circulation, known as magnetospheric convection. Earth’s magnetic tail plays an important...

Semihyponormality of Commuting Pairs of Hilbert Space Operators Professor Raúl Curto; Department of Mathematics, University of Iowa We will first describe an explicit formula for the square root of positive 2 x 2 operator matrices with commuting entries, and then use it to define and study semi-hyponormality for commuting pairs of Hilbert space operators. For the well-known 3-parameter family W_(α, β) (a, x, y) of 2-variable weighted shifts, we have been able to completely identify the pa...
