Tow Lecture in Economics: Kaushik Basu

Our Economics Clarence Tow Public Lecture Series features Professor Kaushik Basu, who is a Professor of Economics and the C. Marks Professor of International Studies at Cornell University. Professor Basu was Chief Economist at the World Bank from 2012 to 2016 and between 2009 and 2012 he was the Chief Economic Advisor to the Government of India. He is the recipient of the 2021 Humboldt Research Award.
In addition to Cornell, Professor Basu has taught at the Delhi School of Economics, Harvard, Princeton and MIT. He has published widely in academic journals, and has contributed articles to many mainstream magazines and newspapers. He has written several books including ‘Beyond the Invisible Hand: Groundwork for a New Economics’ (Princeton University Press and Penguin); and ‘An Economist in the Real World: the Art of Policymaking in India’ (MIT Press).
His research and policy work are at the confluence of Economics, Law, Finance, Industrial Organization, Ethics and International and Development Economics and Policy
In this Clarence Tow Lecture Series presentation, Professor Basu will draw from his extensive experience in policy work to talk about how research ideas and models from the world of academia can be successfully used in the world of policymaking.
